The below member presents findings from the January 2025 Short-Term Rental Tax Survey conducted by EMC Research, which gathered insights from 700 registered voters across Washington state. The results highlight widespread opposition to a proposed tax increase of up to 10% on short-term rentals to fund affordable housing, with more than 60% of voters against the measure. Voters are also skeptical about the effectiveness of such a tax, with most believing it will negatively impact local hosts and families rather than improve housing affordability. Additionally, strong majorities recognize the economic benefits of short-term rentals, and nearly two-thirds do not see them as overly prevalent in their communities. The survey underscores the public’s preference for policies that focus on making new housing development easier and faster rather than imposing additional taxes.
